Munich, the culturally diverse city on the edge of the Alps, is the third-largest metropolis in the Federal Republic of Germany. The city, which has some 1.4 million inhabitants, occupies eleventh and fourth position respectively in the Mercer Quality of Living Survey rankings for personal safety and life quality. Munich is divided into 25 municipal districts in which the main language spoken is a so-called Middle Bavarian dialect.

Munich is seat of both the federal state parliament and the Bavarian state government, while international state institutions such as the European Patent Office and the Federal Fiscal Court are also based in the city. The mayor of the state capital is Dieter Reiter of the German Social Democratic Party (SPD). Munich is also a key commercial metropolis and six DAX-listed companies are headquartered in the city. Among the most famous events in Munich is the Oktoberfest, which takes place for two weeks every year on the Theresienwiese. With over six million visitors per year, it is the world's largest folk festival and attracts people from every corner of the globe.
